Celestial Plague Chapter Headers

Hi all!

With Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana going up for pre-order soon I thought I’d show you what the chapter headers will look like! Each of the main characters - Shannon, Ashleigh, Raya and Jenna have one. Every time there is a POV switch, their chapter header will show up. I wanted to make it easier for people to read without trying to figure out who the POV of each chapter is.

I originally had designs for each character planned out but that changed when it came to hiring an artist. All of the chapter headers are now animal related instead of Ashleigh having the sun. I think this makes the chapter headers looks better and also sticks to a theme.

Make sure you check out the artist, Bruja verde, their art is beautiful and they deserve some love!

First up - we have Shannon. As a winged character, I knew that having a bird as her header would make the most sense. Hers was the first one I came up with as I knew birds would be involved in her header in some form. Once I decided on the animal theme, it was only natural that she would be a bird.

Ashleigh’s design is the one I flip-flopped the most on. I wanted to go with a chameleon at first but I was worried that it wouldn’t make sense as her power has a slim connection to the animal. I thought a sun would be a good idea instead as it would signify her rise through the series. Ultimately I went with the animal theme so the chameleon came back.

Like Shannon, Raya’s header was quite simple to choose from. Her power is shapeshifting into a panther, so it only makes sense that her chapter header would be a panther too. I’ve name this panther Damisa after her feline counterpart in the books.

Jenna’s header is my favourite out of all the designs. As her power is breathing underwater with her gills it’s only natural that her header would be a fish. Bruja verde really went above and beyond with this one, I think the fish itself is gorgeous.

There is one final chapter header… But you’ll have to read the books to see it! To post it here would be a spoiler for book two onwards. It’s another gorgeous design that follows the animal theme. I’ll give you a hint… Metamorphosis plays a big part in the Celestial Plague universe. The virus has a life-cycle that ends in a complete change for the host.

Once again, make sure you check out Bruja verde! Curse of Anubis is another series that has multiple POVs so I will go back to them to get the chapter headers for those books too.

That’s it for this week, which chapter header is your favourite? Let me know in the comments! See you next week.

Elemental Dragons Pins!

Hi all,

This week I have some exciting news to share with you - Elemental Dragons is now in pin form!

As you can see from the above picture, both Aqueous and Drea have now been transformed into wearable pins! I’m going to do a giveaway of these two in my newsletter next month, so if you want a chance of winning make sure you sign up here: Newsletter.

As well as pins and stickers I have plans to do merchandise in other forms as well. If you want to help decide what I should make, you can take the survey here: Merch Survey.

I’m hoping at some point to make a shop where I can make all this merch available to you. As well as pins and stickers, I’ll also be doing signed paperback books! Once I have the logistics of this sorted out I’ll try and make it a reality, though it might take a while.

Another thing that I’ve been thinking of for a while now is creating a Patreon. With this, I’ll post chapters of an exclusive book that I’ve been working on. Again, this might take a while to come to fruition but I would really like to make it a reality. The book would be a YA Fantasy book centred on Greek Mythology. Most notably, Laelaps and the Teumessian fox. They will be sent back to Earth when a disaster occurs and the Gods are nowhere to be found. By day they transform into humans and by night they are back in canine forms.

If you like the sound of a Patreon, make sure you tell me in the survey! Along with chapters of that book I’ll also be doing other things, such as polls and a monthly writing prompt decided by my Patrons. There will also be rewards!

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week!

PS; don’t forget to check out these bundles, you might just find your new favourite author!

My Writing Playlist Part Two

Hi all!

Two years ago I wrote a blog post about songs I listen to that have inspired my writing. As it’s been a while I thought I’d do a part two to that list. You can read the first part here.

Figure 8 - Ellie Goulding

Guns and Horses - Ellie Goulding

Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood

Stone Cold Classic 3000 - George Barnett

Est-Ce Que Tu M'aimes? - Maître Gims

Je Te Pardonne - Maître Gims ft Sia

Breaking My Bones - Friday Pilots Club

Heat Waves - Glass Animals

Young Gods - Halsey

Burn The Stars - Massive Vibes

Hiding In The Blue - TheFatRat & RIELL

Darkside - NEONI

Don’t Look Back - The Dear Hunter

G.O.M.D. - Sickick

Glass Animals is on the list again as I absolutely adore their music and it’s great for writing to. There’s also quite a few by the same artists here as well. Once I find a singer that resonates with my writing I tend to explore a lot of their songs!

Some of these are great for writing action scenes to, such as Breaking My Bones and Stone Cold Classic 3000. Whereas Je Te Pardonne and Don’t Look Back are better for sadder, more emotional scenes. I listen to these songs a lot, as well a lot of the ones from part one of this post. Maybe in two years I can expand on this list again! I’m always on the lookout for new music to keep me going while I’m doing short writing sprints or to inspire certain scenes.

Hiding In The Blue has actually inspired what I hope to be a book series about Norse mythology! (Once I’ve done a bit more planning…). I’ve also had a few ideas bounce around my head since the first time I listened to G.O.M.D. which will hopefully turn into at least one book.

That’s it for this week, I hope you check out some of the music I’ve talked about, the songs are great to listen to whether you’re writing or not. See you next week!

The Winged Character in Celestial Plague

Hi all,

Not that long ago I wrote a blog post on Raya, one of the main characters of Celestial Plague. Following on from her post, I thought I'd write about another of the main characters - Shannon Pennylove. Her power is passive as she can fly. Unlike a lot of winged people however, her wings are deformed thanks to her genes. Her father has bat wings while her mother has bird wings. While this would usually present itself as the child getting one of their parent's wings this didn't work out for Shannon. Instead she got a strange mix of both that aren't the best for flying or appearance. For years her parents were a laughing stock because of this and considered her birth to be a punishment that drove them towards Warren's cult. Her parents consider her a disappointment because of this and don't interact with her much.

Her wings are a mix of a bird’s and a bat's - she has the structure of bat wings and the membranes but they're covered in brown and grey ombre feathers. They're bulky and hard to fly with. Not that flying matters to her anyway, as she is terrified of it. Thanks to her parents lack of encouragement and several failed attempts at flying, she developed a fear of heights. This appears several times throughout the books and Shannon barely uses her wings because of this, even when it would help her friends.

Her dream is to become a police officer one day, though this dream is shot down due to her wings. Some of the only jobs she can do involve flying or piloting. Neither of which she wants to do. She feels lost and useless compared to her friends, especially Raya who is fine with fighting off threats whenever necessary. She, Raya and Ashleigh were all part of Warren's cult before Shannon was outed as a lesbian and kicked out. Surprisingly her parents picked her over Warren, which is something she never understands.

Jenna is her girlfriend in the beginning of the first book and the two of them could be considered close, though their relationship is one-sided. Ashleigh and Raya don't like Jenna too much, but put up with her for Jenna's sake. With all the events that happen in the series Shannon still holds a torch for Jenna and will always try to help her if she can. Even when her friends plead with her to let Jenna go.

In the future I'll do posts on Jenna and Ashleigh - the last two main characters of Celestial Plague.

I hope you enjoyed reading, see you next week.

The Team Taking Down The Rot

Hi all,

On the first of this month I started writing the fourth book in the Celestial Plague series, Hell. As well as the core main characters there are also new characters that are important to the story, so I thought I'd talk a bit about them here. They are the ones who decide to get rid of The Rot and their powers are quite interesting with how they fit into their plan.

Mirai.

Mirai is the oldest of the new characters at twenty years old. She is Japanese. Her power is passive as she can see visions of the future. She can't control these visions and she only sees things that are deemed 'important'. Her father also has visions of the future but his are near constant and he sees everything regardless of whether it's important or not. Her family plays a large role in this book as they are the ones who convince the others that they can eradicate The Rot.

Shari.

Shari is the youngest of the new characters at fourteen. She is half Hungarian on her mother’s side and grew up there before moving to the UK when the SARJ virus hit. Her power is creating a pocket dimension that she can send things to, but they can't come back. If you've read my previous blog posts about Celestial Plague then you might remember me mentioning a character called Shani who initially supposed to have a book of her own in the series before I revamped the idea and characters. Shari is almost identical to Shani apart from the name and the fact that she isn't raised by Jenna and Cindy. I really liked the idea of the character and was ecstatic when I came up with a way to slot her into the series again. Her power is the key to getting rid of The Rot, as the plan is to send it to her pocket dimension. Shari is also the only one of the new characters that is Bitten.

Romina.

Romina is seventeen and her power is shapeshifting. She is Spanish. She can shapeshift into a tiger at will and is skilled in combat. She is protective of Shari especially as she is the youngest of the group. She and Mirai are close but are stressed with their way of life and the SARJ virus and The Rot. She jumps at the chance to do something about it, and is the most willing member of the group. The only person she doesn't get along with is Amyra.

Amyra.

Amyra, like Jenna and Cindy, isn't a part of the initial group. She joins later after stumbling upon the group's cabin after they are attacked by a mutated Sarj. She is a British Muslim. Her power is that she can create forcefields that can keep almost everything out. Her power is the key to reaching the source of The Rot, as she can protect the others from its effects as they travel. She is sixteen and is extremely distrustful of the group at first, especially Mirai. They know each other but they're hesitant to tell anyone why.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Nirvana Chapter One Preview

Hi all!

Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana will be available for pre-order next month so it’s time for a sneak peek into this new series. This is the first book in a YA Post-Apocalyptic series filled with magical powers, killer robots and an infectious virus. You can read the first chapter below:

Shannon anxiously awaits the school bell, tapping her desk with her pencil absentmindedly, as she drowns out the babble of her teacher, Ms Thornkettle. A prod from behind snaps her out of her daydream, and she swings around to face the culprit.

Her girlfriend, Jenna, wiggles her eyebrows at Shannon in a flirtatious manner. Shannon took notice of Jenna’s shiny chocolate brown hair which didn’t stretch beyond her chin and the pair of dazzling brown eyes looking back at hers. On both sides of her pale neck are a pair of gills due to her natural ability to breathe underwater. It is a stark contrast to Shannon’s grey feathered bat-like wings. Shannon always felt inferior to Jenna; the two are like chalk and cheese when it comes to looks. Shannon is short and podgy, with long, dirty blonde hair, dull blue eyes and skin almost as pale as chalk.

Everyone has a power, but not all of them are physical. Or considered useful. Some, like Shannon’s, are thought of as more of a burden. Her wings stick out when she moves, and she takes up more space when sitting down. Little things that are inconvenient to others.

I wonder what you see in me. Shannon thinks, returning Jenna’s defiant grin.

For a few seconds, the girls stare into each other’s eyes before Shannon notices the gills on her girlfriend’s neck flare, a sign of trouble.

“Miss Pennylove, care to share with the class?”

Shannon girl squeezes her eyes shut and suppresses a sigh as she turns back around to face her teacher. Ms Thornkettle looks older than she really is, with her frizzy grey hair and bony fingers.

“I didn’t say anything, ma’am.”

The older woman smirks and turns to a blonde girl at the front. “Is this true, Miss Delpy?”

Both Shannon and Jenna scowl as the girl at the front angles her deformed elf-like ears towards them. “No ma’am, she was making fun of you.”

“I didn’t say-”

“Silence!” Ms Thornkettle whacks her desk with a ruler repeatedly, making everyone jump.

“No, she’s lying!” Jenna jumps to her feet, glaring Cindy down with her blazing eyes.

Shannon’s wings flutter slightly at the thought of getting Jenna in trouble, but she knows better than to try to stop her from doing anything stupid.

“Miss Delpy never lies,” Ms Thornkettle replies sharply. “Miss Pennylove, go stand in the corridor for the remainder of the lesson.”

Shannon knows better than to argue but tries anyway. “But-”

Now!”

With a defeated sigh, Shannon grabs her bag and quickly gathers her things. Before she can make it out the door, however, her wing catch on a poster on the wall, tearing it in half. She doesn’t even get the chance to apologise before Ms Thornkettle starts her rant.

“Oh, here we go again! You winged people are so clumsy, so useless!” Ms Thornkettle smirks darkly, knowing that her words have touched a nerve. “You need your own winged school. Maybe then your kind won’t disrupt the class!”

“Wingicism is-” Shannon begins, only to be silenced by the ruler hitting the desk once more.

“Frowned upon, not illegal. Get out, Miss Pennylove.”

The class erupts into cheers as Shannon closes the door behind her. She tries her hardest to prevent the tears from flowing as she slides slid down the wall onto the floor. and puts her head in her hands, trying to stifle the sniffles.

I hate you.

It takes her a while to get comfortable on the floor as her wings keep sticking out at awkward angles, but eventually she decides to sit cross-legged and lean forward slightly, so the too-large-for-her-body wings can rest comfortably against the cold concrete wall.

“My parents are going to kill me for this,” she mutters to herself, her eyes lazily scanning the hallway.

The walls and floor are a garish green, covered in dirt and grime from a lack of care. There are several red doors in the hallway, leading to different classrooms filled with children. Some probably knew she was already out here, whether they could hear, sense or ‘see’ her. There are so many different abilities in the school she struggles to keep up sometimes. Hers is one of the most noticeable; her grey wings stuck out like a sore thumb. Her eyes drift to an old television at the end of the hallway, tuned into the local news channel.

“-spreading quickly…. has now reached all seven continents…. if you or someone you know experiences the following symptoms, go to the hospital immediately. Do not wait and do not touch the infected person. Airlines are shutting down because of-”

What looks like a matte grey cylinder floats in front of the television. There is a pump connected to its body. The hoover attachment on the robot drowns out the rest of the news, so Shannon sighs and leans her head back against the wall. The movement attracts the attention of the robot, which looks at her with a glowing blue eye.

“PLEASE STATE NAME AND REASON FOR LOITERING.”

“Halo-O, Shannon Pennylove. I have been kicked out of class by Mrs Thornkettle.”

“PROCESSING. PLEASE WAIT.”

Shannon only has one Halo-O Bot at home, one of the older versions. Its main job is to keep the garden tidy and the streets clean. Almost everyone has their own Bot, and those that don’t, rely on the ones the government sends out to clean the streets and take away rubbish. The ones in school have been programmed to alert teachers about kids who aren’t in classes. She has heard about some keeping expelled and suspended students out of the building, but she’s never seen it herself. The Bot doesn’t have arms, only cleaning attachments that it can swap out. How can it keep someone out of a building?

“CONFIRMED. PLEASE REMAIN HERE UNTIL THE BELL RINGS.”

“Halo-O, confirmed.”

The Bot goes back to its task, and she feels a bit of heat in her cheeks. Ms Thornkettle authorised that extremely quickly. This means that the head teacher is probably already aware of it. That will be another letter home to her parents.

The obnoxiously loud ring of the school bell makes Shannon jump to her feet. The door to her classroom opens immediately and students file out in a rowdy manner, pushing and shoving to be the first to leave. She tries to lean against the wall casually as she waits for Jenna and Ashleigh, but only receives snorts and giggles in return. Finally, a bald black girl covered head-to-toe in white exits the room, smiling softly at her.

“Are you okay?” she asks, rubbing Shannon’s arm with a gloved hand.

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine.”

“I am, really.”

Ashleigh frowns slightly. “Don’t worry, I’ll ask Lord Warren to pray for her to go to Hell.”

“Um, thanks.” Shannon smiles slightly.

Her friend was born into a strict cult, although she didn’t see it that way. Shannon and their other friend, Raya, weren’t born into the cult but they joined several years later, thanks to their parents. So far, Shannon’s family is the only one out of their friend group that defied Warren and left.

The two girls hug and Ashleigh accidentally brushes against Shannon’s blonde hair, the strands turning a neon green and light blue once they meet her exposed skin. Ashleigh’s power is that she can change the colour of hair and sometimes fabric. While usually people learn to control her power, this is supressed in the cult. Ashleigh can’t touch hair without changing its colour to something random.

“Oh no! I’m so sorry, I’ll punish myself for you!” Ashleigh cries, throwing her hands over her mouth and muttering prayers into her palm.

“There’s no need, it’s kinda cool actually-”

“It’s a sin!” Ashleigh looks like she’s about to burst into tears until a tall, beautiful girl with tanned skin comes up behind her.

“Lee, are you okay?” the girl asks in a gruff voice.

“Rai, I’ve sinned!”

Raya rolls her emerald green eyes dismissively. “It’s fine.”

“No, I need to be punished!”

“Is your girlfriend coming or what?” Raya ignores Ashleigh’s frantic cries and turns to Shannon.

“I’m guessing Mrs Thornkettle wants to speak to her,” the blonde girl replies.

“You got sent out again?” Raya asks, pressing herself against the wall as a group of rambunctious boys get too close to her.

“I get sent out every lesson.”

“And every lesson it’s a load of shit!” Jenna announces, swinging the door open dramatically.

“There you are, let’s go.” Raya scowls, her eyes darting around the hallway at various groups of people anxiously.

The blonde girl from earlier, Cindy, stalks out of the room with a large grin on her face. The girls say nothing as she barges past them, though Jenna does stick a middle finger up behind her back.

Raya shuffles impatiently, so Shannon grabs her girlfriend’s hand and starts leading her through the maze-like hallways.

“Thank you,” her friend mutters, smiling slightly.

Shannon nods silently back, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention to Raya.

“So, what’s the plan, then? Your place?” Jenna sticks her tongue out and winks at Shannon, making her blush.

“My parents are out of town, so you can all sleep over if you want.”

“But how will we all get our Career Letters?” Ashleigh asks, chewing the tips of her white gloves.

Shannon shudders at the thought of Career Letters, a list of jobs that they can apply for. Certain jobs can be off-limits to those who have certain powers. As a winged, she only hopes that policewoman would be on there, she isn’t interested in doing anything else, despite the protest from her winged parents. Winged are more limited than most as a lot of employers don’t want to hire people who are clumsier on land than non-winged.

“The postman around my place can track anyone down. He knows where everyone is, wherever they are.”

“Sweet.” Jenna swings her hand in the air, getting a few weird looks from the other students. “Is six okay?”

“That’s fine-”

“We can’t do six!” Ashleigh interrupts, looking guiltily at the blobs of fading green and blue in Shannon’s hair. “Rai and I have a sermon. We can come after. I’m sure we have clothes that we left last time we stayed over if we don’t have time to pack our own.”

Raya rolls her eyes but says nothing.

“Then just come round when it finishes okay? I won’t lock you out,” Shannon jokes, earning a smirk from her friends.

The broadcast on the television is forgotten when the girls walk home.

***

“C’mon, Lee. You look fine.” Raya perches uncomfortably on her friend’s lumpy bed, twiddling her thumbs.

“But Lord Warren-”

“Is an asshole,” her friend finishes for her.

Ashleigh glares at her before returning to tying up the rows of snow-white ribbons across her chest and thighs, the traditional garments for a sermon. They’re both wearing long white, frumpy dresses which cover everything apart from their heads, and silken gloves. “He’s my father.”

“I know,” Raya looks down at the floor. “But that doesn’t make Warrish a true religion.”

“It is. I know you’ve lost faith, but I haven’t. I know God is looking out for me.”

“God wouldn’t allow this to happen, He wouldn’t allow Warren to kick people out of a church for not following everything in the Bible. He certainly wouldn’t allow girls to be married off at the earliest opportunity to have babies.” her friend argues.

She ignores Raya’s eyes welling with tears to return to the plain wooden mirror. She plucks a white veil off her nightstand and says, “Why don’t you turn the TV on, I’ll be done soon.”

Raya tears her gaze away from her friend to turn on the dust box that is the television. A hitched gasp makes Ashleigh turn around to see what’s going on, her eyes locking on a red warning on the screen.

SARJ VIRUS IS SPREADING. THE COUNTRY IS NOW IN LOCKDOWN. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HOMES UNLESS YOU ARE AN ESSENTIAL WORKER. ESSENTIAL WORKERS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: DOCTORS, NURSES, POLICE OFFICERS, FIREFIGHTERS-

Ashleigh stops reading the scrawl on the screen to look at her friend. They both stand up with their hands clenched tightly into fists.

“It’s getting worse.” Raya gulps, watching the message crawl across the screen repeatedly.

“Lord Warren said that we’ll be spared.”

Her friend straightens up, towering over the other girl. At six feet, Raya looks intimidating compared to Ashleigh’s five-foot stature. “We shouldn’t go tonight, what if something happens?”

“We’ll be protected,” Ashleigh replies casually, pretending to fiddle with the buttons on her dress.

Please, I don’t think it’s a good idea…”

“Then don’t go.”

“I’m not letting you go on your own.”

Ashleigh throws her arms up in the air in frustration. “Then we have to go, now.”

The two girls exit the run-down house in silence, though Raya looks around worriedly as Ashleigh locks the door. They live in Warrville, the home of all those who follow the Warrish faith. The houses are old and run-down, but Lord Warren says they shouldn’t worry about it in this life, as in the next, they will live in luxury with God. Though Ashleigh won’t admit it to her friend, a part of her wants to stay inside.

***

“Oh shit!”

Shannon rushes into the kitchen at the sound of the smoke alarm, screaming that her cookies are burning. Grabbing a kitchen cloth, she throws open the oven door and stares at the charred mess that was her ginger cookies.

Takeaway it is then.

Scraping her failed masterpiece into the bin, she returns to the large living room, filled with modern décor and various piloting awards that her parents won. Piloting was their pride and joy, and as much as they wanted her to follow suit, she didn’t want to fly.

She hated it.

It had been embarrassing to admit to her parents that she was terrified of heights, but they just laughed and told her to stop joking around.

They’ll believe me when I become a policewoman.

Shannon curls up on the plush red sofa in her duck pyjamas while she turns the television back on to see what had been so boring that it made her doze off and burn her cookies. To her surprise, the news comes on. She tries to change the channel, but it just lands on the news again. Confused, she unmutes it and settles back to listen.

“-To leave your homes. The SARJ virus, named after the sergeant who first got infected, has spread across the world.” Photos of people with a blue ring around their iris pops on the screen. “This is the only known physical symptom of the virus. The others being increased agitation and aggression that can lead to violence. The government is warning people to stay inside and to avoid the infected. I repeat, do not leave your homes.” With that, the news goes dark, and a red message appears on the screen: SARJ VIRUS IS SPREADING. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HOMES.

Shaking slightly, Shannon wonders if she should call her parents when Jenna bursts into the room, leaping onto the sofa, screeching. Shannon screams and shoots up into the air, propelled by her wings. Her girlfriend rolls around on the floor, clutching her stomach and laughing.

“Jen!”

“Gotcha!” Jenna giggles, snorting as Shannon drops to the floor.

“I thought you were one of those infected people.”

“A what now?” Jenna stops laughing to glance at the television screen, and instantly sits up. “Oh shit…”

“What do we do?”

“Carry on as normal…?”

“But-”

Jenna rolls onto her feet and approaches the window, pulling back the grey curtains to reveal the dark, empty street. “It’s fine out there, no signs of the infected.”

“Not yet.”

“You’re freaking out over nothing.” Jenna sniffs the air. “Did you burn something?”

“Burnt cookies are the last thing on my mind right now.”

“Then let’s order a takeaway!” Jenna grabs the phone and starts dialling.

“They’re not going to be open with a virus-” Shannon shuts her mouth as a faint voice on the other end of the phone picks up.

“Hi, are you doing delivery? Oh, you are?” She winks and gives Shannon a thumbs up. “Can I get one portion of chicken fried rice-”

Shannon settles back onto the sofa as her girlfriend lists off an order. Maybe it’s not so bad after all yet.

***

Raya cringes as Lord Warren approaches her after his evening sermon, looking her up and down greedily. He’s always looked at her like she was a piece of meat rather than a human being. He probably can’t wait to have her married off to one of his most loyal followers. His dark face is wrinkled and covered in white painted stars, the symbol of the higher ups in his ‘religion’. He’s in his sixties, but with all the paint on top, he only looks like he is in his late forties. A thorny crown entangled itself on the mop of grey hair that sits atop his head.

“Blessings, child.” He smiles darkly.

“Blessings, Lord,” she replies, glancing around the candlelit room, hoping someone will notice him talking to her.

“What is it, child. You look troubled?” He places a hand on her arm, making her flinch and jump back.

“I’m fine… Lord.”

Thankfully, before the creepy old man can ask her any more questions, Ashleigh yanks her away.

“We should go,” she says worriedly, glancing back at two men dressed in all black, looking her up and down.

“Thank God, let’s go.”

“Don’t use His name in vain!”

The two girls lock arms as they prepare to exit the hot, overcrowded shed that is the ‘church’. The walls are made of rotting wood and covered in various paintings and scriptures of the Warrish religion and commandments. The roof had been ripped off ages ago by a freak storm, and Lord Warren never replaced it because he saw it as God’s will. Before they can leave, the doors are thrown open by a man in a grey hoodie and ripped jeans. His eyes are locked on the floor, his bare feet dragging painfully slowly across the wood.

Lord Warren immediately rushes over to the stranger but doesn’t touch him. “Ah! A new follower I presume, welcome!”

“…Nirvana…” The man whispers so quietly Raya has to strain her ears to hear him.

“Nirvana? What do you mean, brother?”

The man looks Lord Warren right in the eye. His eyes are blood shot and glassy, with a slight light blue ring around his iris. “I want… to reach… Nirvana.”

“I’m sorry, you won’t reach Nirvana here. We don’t believe in such a place,” Lord Warren replies, his tone getting more frustrated by the second.

“Four humans… three others… to reach... Nirvana…”

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

The man looks around the room slowly, locking gazes with everyone. Before anyone can ask him to leave again, he lunges at a nearby man, sinking his teeth into his cheek. The church member screams and flails as he drops to the floor, seizing uncontrollably. His attacker laughs as the blue around his iris glows. “Another!”

“He’s crazy!” Raya mutters, pushing Ashleigh towards the door. “Go!”

The two girls rush outside into the dark street just as panic erupts in the church. They run through the forest, a shortcut to Ashleigh’s house. Usually, it’s dark and scary to them, but tonight, they are running from something far worse. There is real danger behind them, and they need to get away.

As soon as they reach Ashleigh’s house, they grab their bags from the bushes outside, having hidden them earlier as Lord Warren had banned them from seeing Shannon in her ‘sinful’ household. Raya’s feet are starting to ache from the short run, but she doesn’t want to stop for more than a few seconds.

“We need to get inside!” Ashleigh screams, yanking her keys out of her bag.

The two girls freeze however, at seeing that the door is already wide open. A figure moves around just inside, turning to look at them with glee.

“Help me get to Nirvana!” The figure screams while blue around their irises glow harshly in the lack of light outside.

Raya grabs Ashleigh’s arm and pulls her down the street. They continue to sprint past every house, seeing many them also broken into. Raya decides then that they need to go to Shannon’s house. Their friend lives in the more affluent part of town, so it has more security; they’d be safer there.

“Keep going, we need to get to Shan’s!”

For once, Ashleigh doesn’t argue, she just wordlessly follows her friend as they run as far away from her house as possible. Eventually, the two girls get tired and are forced to slow down, their breathing harsh and ragged. The taste of copper in her mouth makes Raya take a few deep breaths, willing the burning in her lungs to stop.

“What’s happening?” Ashleigh cries. “We’ve sinned… we left them!”

“Left who?”

“Our brothers and sisters! Our Lord-”

“Fuck them, we need to concentrate on ourselves!”

“I should have warned them when I got that bad feeling… God was trying to speak through me!”

“What are you talking about?”

Ashleigh throws her arms up in the air, past her bald head. “When I said we had to leave… I had a bad feeling. I should have said something!”

“Your gut feeling saved us!” Raya argues, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her. “We’re safe because of you, we need to keep going!”

“No, we need to go back and save them!”

“Lee!” Raya grabs her friend by the shoulders and shakes her violently until Ashleigh locks eyes with her. For a few seconds, Raya tries to think of the words to make her friend continue, when several police cars fly past them. Their sirens blare and light up the whole neighbourhood in a stream of reds and blues.

Ashleigh lets out a weak scream and points behind her friend. Not needing to turn around, Raya grabs her friend’s hand and pulls her down the street. All they had to do was make it to Shannon’s, then they would be safe.

She hopes.

Pride Month - Dragon Edition

Hi all,

As it's Pride Month I've wanted to make a blog post but I wasn't sure what to write about. Then, as I was going over my notes for the Elemental Dragons series, I decided to write about the dragons. Not all of them get a chance to explore their sexualities in the books so I thought I would expand a bit here! This will include dragons from Elemental Dragons, Original Elementals and the Short Story Collection.

Short Story Collection

Russet - A female dragon who is Bisexual.

Moon - A male dragon who is Gay.

Elemental Dragons.

Drea - A female dragon who is Asexual Aromantic.

Cerberus - A female dragon who is Lesbian.

Winter - A female dragon who is Demisexual Bisexual.

Fortune - A male dragon who is Closeted Gay.

Original Elementals.

Devouring - A female dragon who is MtF Transgender.

Arcturus - A male dragon who is Asexual.

Turf - A male dragon who is Bisexual.

Maelstrom - A female dragon who is Pansexual.

Shadowhunter - A female dragon who is Lesbian.

Sunrise - A male dragon who is Asexual Aromantic.

A lot of the dragons do have crushes on each other that might not have been obvious in the books. For example, Cerberus has a huge crush on Drea, even though the other dragon can't stand her. Fortune likes many of the male dragons in the series but doesn't feel comfortable enough to explore his sexuality.

After years of trying to understand my Bisexuality I think it's important that I create a diverse cast of characters. Their sexualities may not have massive impacts on the books, but they're still a part of them. I think it's important that even the dragons have a wide range of sexualities because there are people out there who want to read about it. My books will continue to feature diverse characters and relationships that are not heterosexual! One of my favourite LGBTQ+ couples so far is Bastet and Sekhmet in Curse of Anubis - the two goddesses are so cute together!

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Why Celestial Plague Now Has an Extra Book

Hi all,

If you follow me on social media you may be aware of the fact that I’m going to write a fourth book in the Celestial Plague series next month. The series is a YA Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy series following four teenage girls as they try to survive in a new world amidst a virus. The series was eventually only going to be three books, but I can’t shake the idea of a fourth out of my head.

The fourth book will haver a time skip.

Celestial Plague #4: Hell, will take place just over a year after the events of the previous three books. I won’t talk about this too much as it includes spoilers. But, all four characters are in this book as well and they will all have chapters dedicated to them.

There will be new characters.

As well as the characters from previous books there will be new ones as well. This book will mainly focus on Jenna, one of the main characters, and more of her adventures in her new world.

There are new villains.

Without giving too much away for the previous books, there will be new villains in this one. This book should also tie up a few loose ends from the previous books.

The virus is still around.

Although not as powerful as before, it’s still around and Jenna hates it. It’s a lot harder for people to get infected now, though it is still possible. The Bots and the Sarjs will also make appearances as the two are unable to live peacefully with one another.

The Rot will be explained.

Although this has little meaning to you now as the first book isn’t even out yet, just know that this book will explain The Rot. It has nothing to do with the virus and is merely a coincidence that it popped up the same time as the virus did. Jenna knows far more about its origins than she’s letting on, however, and this will come out in this book.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week!

Elemental Dragons - Purpose

Hi all,

This week I’m going to post one of the stories featured in the Elemental Dragons Short Story Collection. To read all of these stories, you can sign up to my mailing list and download the ebook here: Free Ebook.

Now, onto the story - Purpose.

Purpose.

That’s all Moon wishes for as he lazes in the warm grass, his scaly body draped in the only sunny spot in the entire forest. Birdsong fills his ears as he closes his eyes, letting the sweet smells of flowers and morning dew fill his nostrils.

Life isn’t very fun without some sort of purpose.

When Derek was alive, he had a purpose, but now all he’s left with is a numb heart. The feisty young ginger boy had been snatched from the claws of life far too early, and because of that, Moon is alone.

He huffs, a thin column of grey smoke flowing from his half-closed mouth. His golden eyes fly open at the sound of rustling directly in front of him. Baring his teeth at the emerald green bushes, he barks out a warning to whatever might be hiding behind the thick foliage. It definitely wasn’t a woodland rabbit or bird.

The rustling continues, more ferociously this time, making Moon back away until his rump grazes the tree bark behind him, scuffing his black and cream scales. For days he had watched this area like a hawk, making sure that no other dragon had claimed this territory as its own. He was so sure that there was no scent markers or scratched bark, could he have been wrong?

A tiny, square orange head peeks out from the bush, a twig sticking out of its ear. The orange dragon breaks out into a large grin at the sight of the older dragon before plunging back into the sea of leaves. Baffled, Moon approaches the bush, sticking his snout amidst the leaves to get a whiff of the young dragon. Mumbling a few questions to the bush dragon, he’s surprised to get several squeaks of reply from other bushes as well. Just as he steps back into the clearing, four tiny bodies slam into him from different angles.

Moon yelps in surprise but is able to calm his beating heart when the tiny dragons screech about getting to ride the large dragon. Shaking himself like a wet dog, Moon is able to dislodge all but one of the small dragons, who clings to his wing with it’s tiny claws. The remaining dragon is able to scramble onto his back, squeaking with pride. The rest of the group bark victoriously at his feet as the small dragon perches itself on his head, its silver feet crushing his snout. With a huff, Moon dips his head forward, causing the little white dragon to tumble onto the grassy floor with its feet and tail bolt upright like a kitten ready to play.

He wasn’t aware that younglings were around here.

They don’t look like locals, they must be visitors, like him.

Moon growls as the young dragons approach him again, only to flatten their ears at his warning. The orange dragon from before introduces himself as Fireball, fluttering his garish yellow wings. With a flippant flick of his tail, Moon settles back under his tree again, back turned to his annoying guests. The four dragon press right against his head, each with a toothy smile plastered to their bright faces. Moon rolls his golden eyes and closes them, ready to sleep, but a second later they flutter open when one of the younglings snuggles into his stomach. The green male with red wings looks up at him lovingly, resting his head on Moon’s belly.

With a sigh, Moon asks them what they want. Happy to have the attention back, Fireball chirps out the names of the remaining members: the white female is Prissy, the male with the clubbed tail is Steve and the one snuggled up to him is Tres. He briefly wonders what sort of name that is, until he glances down at the green dragon, who has a small stump where his left front foot should be. Now that he’s actually looking at them properly, it’s obvious they are all too young to be by themselves. They probably couldn’t even hunt yet.

He asks the ragtag group where their human companions are, which makes them all droop their heads sadly. It didn’t take a genius to know that they were gone.

Probably taken by war, like Derek. Such a waste of life.

With an irritable sigh, he realises why the younglings have taken such a shine to him. They needed someone to help them survive. Although the forest is generally safe, it only took one mean dragon to scar the little group for life.

For a minute he thinks about sending them away, until he looks down at Tres, clearly the youngest due to his tiny stature. The green dragon stares at him with hopeful crimson eyes, clutching his belly scales as if the older dragon would just disappear.

With a defeated sigh, Moon mumbles that the younglings can stay with him for a while. Four happy tails shoot up into the air and most of the group let out excitable yaps.

He supposed they could be his entertainment for a while.

***

Excited yips rouse Moon from his slumber. For a second he’s confused, until he remembers the younglings that he, quite literally, took under his wing yesterday.

Four excited faces stare back at him, their eyes sparkling in the sunlight. He looks up at their tiny faces, covered in beautiful colourful dotted markings from their human companions. Whenever a dragon is paired with a human, they inherit markings from that human that correspond to their element. Moon never did find out how, or why, these markings appeared with human companionship. But, he supposed he didn’t care when Derek was there to make him happy. Now that their humans are gone however, the markings will just be doomed to be unfinished mosaics.

The younglings complain about their empty bellies, prodding the large dragon on the snout. Moon rises to his feet with a stretch and casts his head around the clearing, breathing in the crisp morning air. The earth around his feet is damp and mushy from a light rain, and the green grass is covered in a layer of cool morning dew. Not the best time for hunting, but it would have to do.

Fireball chirps impatiently, wanting the older dragon to do something. Moon sweeps the younglings behind him with his tail and trots into the foliage, getting swallowed by the clumps of wet leaves and aromatic flowers. The younglings leap around his feet, tumbling and batting each other playfully. Moon smiles slightly as he watches the white female, Prissy, tackle Steve from behind and press his grey face into the thick sludge of forest mud.

A low growl up ahead makes Moon freeze in his tracks and spread his cream wings in an attack stance. In front of the ragtag group is a bulky navy blue dragon with one single sunny yellow eye. The dragon’s flank is covered in pink scars where the scales haven’t grown back, and the spikes on his tail are chipped and broken at different angles. A wave of fear ripples through Moon’s body, but he tries his hardest to ignore it when the younglings huddle around his legs. The strange dragon looks at each of the four younglings hungrily, licking his lips with a slimy grey tongue. Moon digs his claws into the earth, unsure of whether it would be wise to start a fight with the older dragon.

Before Moon has the chance to back away, the blue dragon leaps, claws outstretched. Left with no choice but to fight, Moon sweeps the younglings away with his tail and prepares himself as the battle-scarred dragon knocks him off his feet, sending him sprawling backwards in a scaly mess. With a harsh growl, Moon rolls to his feet, drenching himself in the heavy mud and opens his mouth wide in a roar, orange flames licking hungrily at the back of his throat. The other dragon just scoffs and plucks Steve off the ground with a dull claw. The grey youngling squeaks and manages to wriggle free, skulking into the bushes to safety.

Smoke rises from Moon’s nostrils like a chimney as a funnel of orange flames slam his opponent’s side, making him cry out in surprise. The black and cream dragon then jumps into the air, landing clumsily on the other dragon’s wing. He digs his claws in, smirking when the other dragon yelps in pain. The other dragon bellows and bucks him off, giving Moon only a second to catch his breath before the dragon barrels into him.

Hot breath that smells like rotten meat assaults his nostrils as the older dragon glares down at him with his one hate-filled yellow eye. Moon flattens his ears, unable to hide the waves of fear creeping through his body.

This dragon could kill him.

He only hoped that Derek would be on the other side, if there was one, to greet him.

The thought makes Moon relax slightly, knowing that his time in the world is up. At least he’ll have someone looking forward to seeing him. Slain in battle, as Derek once was.

Dribble escapes the dragon’s lips, his grey tongue darting between his chipped teeth, taunting Moon. Just when he prepares himself for the killing blow, a fireball strikes his opponent on the side of the head, tearing blue scales off his cheek. The dragon roars in a mixture of anger and shock and staggers off Moon, allowing him to crawl away. Much to his surprise, Fireball leaps onto Moon’s shoulders, spreading his bright yellow wings to threaten the other dragon.

Moon growls a warning as his opponent eyes each youngling up. The blue dragon scoffs and stumbles away, his cheek sizzling and inflamed from the heat of the attack. Once the other dragon wanders out of sight into the trees, Moon relaxes and lets out a breath he hadn’t realised he had been holding.

He’s alive.

Fireball bounces in front of Moon, a toothy grin on his face. The other younglings crowd around them, yapping about how cool the fight was and how brave they are. Moon chuckles and sits up, allowing the younglings to snuggle up to his feet.

Steve and Tres attempt to replicate the roars from the fight, but they only come out as tiny squeaks. Prissy looks up at him, her grassy green eyes filled with gratitude. Moon feels a wave of pride spread through him, he gave these younglings a fighting chance at surviving.

They need him.

They want to stay with him.

With Derek gone, company is always nice. Maybe he had grown bitter in his years alone. As he looks down at the younglings, his heart swells.

Moon asks the younglings with a low bark if they would like to stay with him permanently, and they all agree excitedly. The four of them start squeaking at each other, replicating his attack stance and battle moves.

Maybe looking after them could be his purpose.

That’s it for this week - I hope you enjoyed reading Purpose! See you next week.

Where to Buy Indie Books on a Budget

Hi all!

This week I'm going to show where you can buy indie, also known as self-published, books when you're on a budget! Libraries and charity shops are great for reading books on a budget but I've found that not many are willing to stock self-published books. It's easy to find traditionally published books in libraries and charity shops as people buy and donate them all the time. So, for those of who you who would love to support indie authors without breaking the bank, I'll show you where to find them!

Amazon Deals.

Amazon has loads of books that are on sale every day. They have perma-free books, which are free to download and Kindle Daily Deals. You can find books for £1 and 99p in the daily deals, which I frequent often to look for a good read! Perma-free and daily deals are pretty good for finding a new series, as the first book could be free or heavily discounted. Although Amazon is used a lot by self-published authors, a lot of traditionally published authors discount their books on Amazon as well.

BookBub.

BookBub is a service that sends out daily or weekly emails with deals on new books. You can choose from loads of genres and formats and they will let you know what books you may like. I get daily emails from them on Fantasy, Sci-Fi, YA and Horror books and I've bought loads of books this way. They have a variety of deals, from free to 99p and heavy discounts. You can also choose where you prefer to buy these books as well, including: Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books and Google. If you're not into ebooks then they also offer deals on audio and print books as well.

Hello Books.

I found Hello Books thanks to being a part of a few author groups on Facebook. They're relatively new and work like BookBub. You get weekly emails with books from each genre that you're subscribed to. I've signed up to their Fantasy, Sci-Fi and YA email lists. All of the books offered are free, 99p or heavily discounted. They currently don't have as many genres as BookBub do, but the books that I've bought thanks to them have been enjoyable. If you want a bit of variety, I'd recommend signing up to both BookBub and Hello Books to get a vast array of books that you may never have discovered.

IASFA.

The IASFA specialise in Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. They send out one email a month that contains a bundle of books with a specific theme. The books are then available to download for free during that time period and once the promotion is over they go back to their original price. There's also occasional book bundles that offer loads of books in one bundle for a set price that doesn't break the bank. I've downloaded from many of their bundles and have loved them! I browse through all of the monthly books, despite what the theme may be, just in case I find a book that I never thought I'd enjoy.

I hope that this post is helpful for readers who love to read but are on a budget! I use all of the above and can personally vouch that they are amazing and great for finding deals. That's it for this week, see you next week.
