April 2024 Camp NaNoWriMo Project Announcement

Hi all,

It's a new year and the first Camp NaNoWriMo of 2024 starts on April 1st. I was going to start writing the next book in the Original Elementals series but I've really missed the characters in Empty Skies. So, I'm going to pivot to writing Empty Skies #2: Freezing Constellations.

This book will continue where book one left off, with Laelaps and Ataraxia. They've just defeated Scylla and are hoping for a bit of a rest before their next challenge. Unfortunately, that doesn't really pan out for them!

This book will have more scenes in the underworld and Cerberus will have a more active role. In the last book, they were there for the battle but that was about it. Now, their home is in danger and they need help to save it. The Namean Lion, Ichor, will be in this book with Charon, the boatman of the dead.

I'm also going to introduce a few more of the constellations in this book. One being Pegasus. They are one of my favourites and I'm hoping to give them a dark spin. They are working with The Freezing to take down all the constellations. I love writing pegasi as bad guys so I can't wait to continue with this book!

I have the prequel series planned which will introduce more characters and why they act the way they do in these books. But I really wanted to write this series first, even though Damaged Goods has been planned for ages. It gives me more time to flesh out events in between though. Some of the characters in this book will appear more often in the prequel series, so I hope you like them enough to continue reading about them.

This is my first Greek mythology series and I'm really excited to write the series which is why I've bumped it up a bit. I'm still undecided whether next NaNoWriMo I'll write Original Elementals or not. Luckily I still have loads of time to decide.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. See you next Sunday.

Strong Women, Strange Worlds Live Reading

Hi all,

On March 1st I did a live reading for Strong Women, Strange Worlds. I've never done a live reading over Zoom before and it was actually really fun! I read a excerpt of Blood and Water and got to listen to the work of five fabulous authors!

I was first up, so I was incredibly nervous and wasn't really sure what to expect. Luckily Mishka didn't try to interrupt, instead she just slept next to me while the event went on. It would have been embarrassing to try to read while Mishka was practicing a musical number! There was a live chat which was really nice because I could get real time feedback when I get as reading. Next time I'll try not to look at the chat as I think that distracted me a bit when reading.

The other authors that read were: (click on their name to go to their websites)

Wen Wen Yang

Anne Karppinen

Phoebe Walker

Ilana DeBare

Carmen Baca

All of their stories were absolutely amazing and it was great watching them read in real time. I loved the different genres and tones that each reading set. Seeing the audience get excited about the readings as well was so lovely to see.

After all the readings were done we had a Q&A session where the audience could ask questions. We discussed researching books, what genres we write and if there's anything we would change about a book published years ago. It was a great session and I really liked getting to interact with the other authors and listen to their opinions on the different questions.

I gave away an ebook copy of Blood and Water to one lucky winner and I hope that they're enjoying it!

Now onto the big question: would I do this again?

The answer is a big fat yes!

I loved every aspect of it and my nerves disappeared quickly once I realised how nice the organisers and other authors are. Everyone was really friendly and supportive.

I would really recommend listening to Strong Women, Strange Worlds as they have a variety of authors on there with so many fantastic stories. If you want to check them out, click here.

That's it for this week! If you tuned in, I hope you enjoyed it. See you next week!

The New Book Titles for Curse of Anubis

Hi all,

About a year ago I made a blog post about how I want to change the titles of the Curse of Anubis books. Before, the titles were:

Halfway

Limbo

Middle

Dual

It's been a long time but I've managed to come up with some new names that will hopefully stick a bit better! The previous names were ones that were supposed to be placeholders until I started writing the books. But I struggled so much with coming up with names that they stayed far too long. But now, I'm glad that I can rectify that!

Book one: The Plague's Hope

Book two: The Burning Snake

Book three: The Frozen Eye

Book four: The Dead Kingdom

I think these titles are more fitting for what actually happens in the books and I think they sound a lot cooler too!

The Plague's Hope refers to Tahira as she is the first, and only, person to be partially resurrected after being a zombie. She can travel between the living world and the afterlife. The dead believe that the one who gets resurrected will find a cure for everyone.

The Burning Snake focuses more on Wadjet as she is the main antagonist in book two. She manages to get hold of Ra's Eye and takes the power for herself.

The Frozen Eye is about Horus' Eye and where it can be found. Seeing as one Eye has been found, the one who wields both is said to become the new ruler of the gods.

The Dead Kingdom I'm sure is a more obvious one, but it refers to all of the zombies. They have taken over most of the living world at this point and Anubis has stopped collecting their hearts.

I'm so glad that I finally sorted the titles out because it was driving me crazy. I've spent ages cycling through names that I think would work and then discarding them for not feeling right. These ones feel a lot better and I'm hoping that they'll stick. Especially since book one is coming out in October.

That's it for this week, I hope you like the new names! See you next week.

I'm Finally Listening to Audiobooks

Hi all!

I'm sure you can guess what I'm going to be writing about based on the title alone. Yes, I've started listening to audiobooks. No, it's not in the way you expect.

I listen to audiobooks to go to sleep.

If the narrator is right, I find their voice really soothing and it helps me to drift off. So far I've listened to some mythology books, a history book, some Doctor Who and some comedy ones too. I'm still getting engrossed in the stories and I'm getting excited to go to sleep because I can listen to the next part. It's not a conventional way of reading books, but I find it's really helping me. If I'm feeling overstimulated or anxious, I find that having something on in the background that I can focus on just helps me gently drift off to sleep. It doesn't even effect Mishka, she'll happily settle next to me and sleep as normal.

So far, my favourite books have been The Stone Rose and Unruly. They both kept me so hooked and I was looking forward to hearing it before bed. I managed to stay up to listen to all of The Stone Rose! I'm listening to them in thirty minute pieces, so it gives me enough time to actually get some sleep instead of staying up all night.

It was my boyfriend's idea, he's listened to a lot when he sleeps to help him settle and now that we're living together I'm doing the same thing. It's nice that I've found a way to enjoy audiobooks as I've always wanted to get into them but find it hard to concentrate on them. I usually lose my place in the book or tune out and stop listening. But at night it gives me a chance to unwind and listen to a good story as I go to sleep.

That's it for this week! See you next Sunday.

BookBrush Review

Hi all!

It's been a while since I last did a review of something that helps my writing so I thought I would write another one. This time I'm reviewing BookBrush, a tool that you can use to make gorgeous images for your book.

I mainly use the custom creator part of BookBrush. I mainly use it for StoryOrigin headers and to make up my advent calendar visuals. They have a plethora of stock images you can use to make these visuals, which I think makes everything look better. You can add effects and stickers to your images as well to make up promo material as well.

If you don't want to create your own, there is the option of using templates that have been designed by the community. You simply pick the book cover you want to add to the images and you can download several in one go! I've used this a few times for a few promo bits. I like the variety of templates and you can search by genre or by what kind of promotion you're running. Sometimes I just like to upload my cover just to see what these materials look like!

I've created a few QR codes on here as well and I've found it incredibly easy. There are also book trailers which I've made up for the Elemental Dragons series. Unfortunately I haven't found a good use for these yet, but hopefully one day I can find somewhere to post them.

One part that has been recently added is the ability to have a book cover made for you. I haven't tried out this service but I'm sure it's as high quality as the other aspects of BookBrush. I did have a video call to chat about it when it first came about but I didn't go with them as they didn't have any example covers at the time. Now that they've been established and designed a few I'm thinking of having another look.

That's it for this week! What do you think of BookBrush? Let me know in the comments. See you next week.

My Favourite Fantasy Shows

Hi all!

It's been a while since I made a post like this so I thought I would finish off with my favourite fantasy shows! I've already written about my favourite sci-fi, horror and zombie shows so I think fantasy is a good one to end on.

The Umbrella Academy.

From the first episode I watched, I was hooked. I love the characters and the way they interact with each other. Klaus is definitely my favourite. I can't wait for the next series. The superpowers are all interesting as a lot of them I haven't actually seen before. The relationship between the siblings are great and I love how they deal with different situations.

Wednesday.

I heard other people raving about this one and knew I needed to give it a go. I loved every second of it and can't wait for the next series. The characters are great and I love all the different powers that the students have. The werewolves are my favourite. I can't wait to see some of the other pupils explored a bit more and how their powers work. Seeing Morticia and Gomez more would be a bonus as I loved their dynamic and how they interacted with each other.

The Witcher.

I love a good fantasy series that's filled with monsters. My favourite parts are the monster fights and seeing how Geralt uses his powers. I've only just started the second season but I'm really enjoying it so far and can't wait to see what happens next. As long as there's monsters, I'll be happy! It will be a surprise to no-one that my favourite episode was the one with the dragons, for obvious reason. I've considered picking up the books for this series but I'm not sure how I would like them as I don't really read that kind of fantasy.

His Dark Materials.

I absolutely loved this show! I read the books when I was younger and really wanted my own daemon. Of course it would have been a snow leopard. I think the show did a really good job of adapting parts of the books and I was hooked all the way through. Even though I knew how it would end it still made me cry. It was a brilliant trip down memory lane from when I read the books and I had forgotten how much I loved the series.

That's it for this week! Have you watched any of these shows? What did you think? Let me know in the comments. See you next Sunday.

Nirvana Has Won an Award!

Hi all,

If you remember my post from last year about Years and Mute winning awards, then you won’t be surprised to hear that I entered Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana for an award as well. I got the results in last month and it is a ‘Recommended Read’!

I’m very careful about what awards I enter as there are so many out there that prey on authors. I’ve entered four books in Author Shout awards now and I trust them so I enter books when I can. But there are still so many out there who charge outrageous fees or don’t even give out their prizes. While I would like to enter my books for more awards, I’m content with just the one for now. At least I know that Author Shout are trustworthy.

With the first book in the Curse of Anubis series out in October, I will hopefully be able to enter that book for an Author Shout award too. I love being able to display the award under my books!

That’s it for this week! See you next week.

Hell Chapter One Preview

Hi all,

The last book in the Celestial Plague series, Hell, goes up for pre-order next month! If you don’t want spoilers for the series, then you’ll want to skip this post.

Chapter One

The city Jenna’s lived in her entire life gets smaller and smaller in the wing mirror. She feels a tinge of sadness for having left it behind, but knows it’s for the best.

Maybe elsewhere the virus isn't so bad.

Cindy, her girlfriend, tightens her grip on the steering wheel. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, why?"

"You've been awfully quiet this whole trip."

"Mixed feelings, I guess. I just hope where we're going is better than what we've left."

Cindy turns her head to study her momentarily. Jenna can't help but focus on her eyes. Two blue and red rings are tinged around her irises, and she flinches. She gives Jenna a sad look before concentrating on the road once more.

The rings are a sign of infection. Her girlfriend was infected at the beginning of the apocalypse and has been Bitten ever since. Although Jenna hates the Bitten with all her heart, she can’t let go of Cindy. The two are together again, and Jenna tries her best to push the thought of Cindy infecting others to the back of her mind. Those infected with the Sarj virus are given instructions from some higher power to infect four Unbitten and three Bitten. Jenna has come across loads in her short time in the apocalypse, but she doesn't feel sympathy for any of them. They choose to infect others. They choose to ruin others’ lives by spreading the virus.

It's selfish.

"Can we stop a minute?"

Cindy's voice yanks her out of her thoughts. "Why?"

"I..." Cindy starts blinking rapidly. "I don't know. Something's wrong."

"But we'll be vulnerable out here."

"Something is wrong, Jen. I'm stopping," Cindy snaps.

Jenna flares her gills before smoothing them back down with her hands. "Okay, fine."

Everyone is born with a power. Some are passive, while others are offensive. Unfortunately, both she and Cindy have passive powers. She has gills, while her girlfriend has deformed ears that can hear anything from miles away. Well, she used to. Infecting others with the virus slowly drains you of your power. Cindy has infected a few Unbitten, which means her power has been significantly reduced. Some days are better than others.

Cindy pulls the car over and slumps back in her seat. Strands of ginger hair are stuck to her forehead, which is caked in sweat.

Jenna's annoyance instantly evaporates. "Sin? What's wrong?"

Her girlfriend takes a few deep breaths and touches the tips of her elf-like ears. "I don't know. My head burns."

"Burns?"

She opens her eyes momentarily, which are now pink and bloodshot. "Yeah."

The rings around her irises look like they're glowing. Even though her entire body screams at her not to, Jenna leans in close and pushes away the sweaty hair. Cindy's forehead feels like it's on fire and all the sweat is starting to tinge the air with an unpleasant smell.

"Are you sick?"

"I... I felt fine a few minutes ago."

Jenna sits back. "Maybe I should drive."

"Have you ever driven before?"

She shrugs. "Kinda."

Her girlfriend rolls her eyes and manages a single laugh. "That doesn't fill me with confidence."

"Well, you can teach me."

Another laugh. "There's no way I'm teaching you right now. I just need a minute to rest."

Jenna glances out the window without answering. The motorway is filled with abandoned cars. Some have their doors wide open, as if the occupants escaped in a hurry. The floor is covered in various belongings and rubbish, filthy and wet from so much exposure to the elements.

"Do you want some air?"

Cindy grits her teeth. "No. I just need to wait for it to pass."

"What makes you think it will pass?"

"It came on like a minute ago. It will pass. It has to."

Jenna sighs and looks out the window once more. Her eyes lazily scan the abandoned cars, trying to make out the words of the license plates. Movement catches her eye, and she stiffens. A humanoid creature on all fours is crouched behind a red car. She only manages to catch it as it stumbles into sight partially. Its skin is dark blue, and from her vantage point, Jenna can see it covering its face with its hands and cowering.

Is it in pain?

When Bitten have infected the seven people they were ordered to, they are whisked away in a bright light. The Sarjs are what comes back. These creatures were once human before they were stripped of everything that made them who they were. They attack Bitten and Unbitten alike, turning them into Sarjs without having to infect seven others.

Why isn't it attacking us? It must know we're here.

Her heart leaps into her throat as the creature falls forward. Its hands are still clinging to the sides of its head, and it raises its legs high to its chest. If it wasn't such a dangerous monster, she may even feel sorry for it.

Jenna grabs Cindy's arm and shakes it slightly. "We need to go, Sin. There are Sarjs here."

Cindy's eyes flutter open, but they're unfocused. "Please, I just need a minute."

Frustration flares up inside her. "I'm telling you that we probably don't have a minute."

Cindy sucks in a pained breath, and tears brim in her eyes. "They've turned on him. That's what's making my head hurt."

Jenna shakes her head. "What are you talking about? Who has turned on who?"

"I don't know. I just know that they've turned on him."

Jenna turns her attention back to the Sarj. It doesn't seem to have noticed them; if it has, it isn't bothered. It continues to shake on the floor, both hands holding its head. The minutes seem to drag out for all eternity until Cindy relaxes with a sigh. She blinks a few times, adjusting to the light.

"Sin?" Her voice barely comes out as a whisper.

"I don't know what's happened. But something has."

Jenna bites back a retort. "What do you mean?"

"I... I don't know how to explain it."

With a dissatisfied grunt, Jenna looks out the window again. The Sarj stands unsteadily on all fours, looking around with its mismatched eyes. She freezes when its gaze passes over them in the car. Then, without interest, it staggers away from them, disappearing in the line of cars.

"The Sarj is gone," she mutters.

"I don't think they'll bother us anymore."

"What makes you say that?"

She shrugs. "I don't know. I just don't think they will."

Jenna watches the road for a few more seconds, expecting a Sarj to jump out. Maybe it was momentarily disoriented. Maybe it saw her but wanted her to let her guard down.

Too many scenarios start running through her head, making her want to cry.

"Let's just get out of here."

False Comet is actually the first story I submitted to Iron Faerie. After I saw the prompt, I came up with an idea that I couldn’t shake! It follows three teenagers who are waiting for a meteor shower but instead witness a comet crash into the Earth. Upon further investiagtion, they wished they had they had just stayed at home instead…

I love seeing my work published in anthologies and I hope to continue submitting to them this year! I’ve already got my eye on a dragon one which I’m hoping to submit to by the end of the month.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoy Nephilim! See you next week.
