Tips for Writing Around Work

Hi all,

This week I'm going to share my tips for writing while working. I do most of my writing around my working day and I usually aim for a word count of around 2000 words a day.

Evernote.

I use Evernote to write on my phone throughout the day. I write during my breaks using labelled notes to keep track of where I am. I also outline novels and character designs using the app. It makes it easier for me to switch between notes to keep track of everything. All of the notes are no more than 10K long so I can keep a general track of my word count.

Silver tipped gloves.

When it gets colder in the winter months I still want to write while out and about. Silver tipped gloves enable me to use my phone without my hands getting too cold. They work really well, it just takes a bit longer to type.

Write during breaks.

I write during my breaks at work and usually on my commute. It means I don't have to write as much when I get home which enables me to relax a bit and focus more on the marketing side of things.

Small word count goals.

Writing in small bursts multiple times during the day really helps me to stay focused and gives me enough breaks in between. 300-400 words in my ten minute breaks and 800-1000 words during my lunch break.

Outline beforehand.

No matter if you're a planner or not, make sure you have a rough outline before you start writing. This will make it a lot easier to write on the go. I have a rough plan of where the plot will go and what the characters are like.

Edit at home.

I write around my working day and then edit at home. It means that I'm not tempted to edit while I'm writing. I edit on my laptop to catch most of the typos that occur due to writing on my phone.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Camp NaNoWriMo Project Announcement - April 2023

Hi all!

Every time I participate in a NaNoWriMo event, I want to make a little announcement post beforehand as well as a brief overview about what the book will be about!

For this April, I will be hoping to get 50K words written in the first draft of Original Elementals #6: Sunrise. This book will be in the point of view of Lucia, the first Light Elemental, who will be leaving Aria to help her father with his business. He sells items made from dragon parts; be it scales, feathers, claws or teeth. She has been tasked with helping Amphiptere Dragons, but they’re her father’s greatest asset in his business. Her relationship with her dragon, Sunrise, will also be explored. The two don’t get on at the moment as the dragon is horrifically scarred and won’t listen to a word she says.

Sunrise and Lucia will be the main focuses of the book, but the rivalry between the Krystalans and the Cindaraans will also come to light. Lucia is brash and thinks that she’s always right, so I’m looking forward to telling her story and hopefully showing her in a more neutral light. The other Originals will appear too, with Benjamin having a large role in this book as well. I want to be able to explore Sunrise’s relationship with other dragons and why he treats them the way he does.

This will be the last book in the Original Elementals series that I will write before taking a break. The next book that I write will not be in the Original Elementals series and will instead be something completely different. This is so I don’t get exhausted writing in the same series and also enables me to write some standalones that I’ve been planning for years.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

My Favourite Books in Different Genres

Hi all!

This week I’m going to post about my favourite books in the genres I love reading! I’ve limited myself to one favourite per genre and I’ve excluded all Warriors books because I’ve blogged about them before and long-time readers know I love them. I have a good mix of traditionally published and self-published books here as well.

Fantasy: Ratha’s Creature

I’ve always had a love for big cats so this book shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. I devoured this series when I was younger and daydreamed about writing prehistoric big cats because of this book. Ratha is a beautifully flawed character but I loved watching her grow across the series.

Horror: Cujo

This book made me fall in love with the horror genre. I never picked up a horror book before this one because I wasn’t sure if I was going to like them. Reading Cujo get sicker and sicker made it so that I couldn’t put the book down, I was so desperate to find out what happened next.

GameLit: The Carnelian Fox

This was the first GameLit book I ever read, I didn’t even know the genre existed until I came across this book. I’ve always loved Pokémon and this book takes a lot of those elements and puts it into a book: collecting elemental animals, building a team and battling. The series is still ongoing and I can’t wait for the next one.

Sci-Fi: Refuge

This book has an incredible premise and I love the characters in it. The descriptions of how the human race starts to fall are so vivid and I read the first book in one sitting. I still have the rest of the series that I need to read, but I keep putting it off because I don’t want it to end!

Crime: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

I never read an Agatha Christie novel before this one and I absolutely loved it! I’m not very good at figuring out who did it but it was a very fun read nonetheless. I’m hoping to read more of her books this year.

Post-Apocalyptic: The Dead Don’t Turn

Although I lost interest with the later books in the series, I really loved the first one. The characters are great and seeing them all trying to deal with a virus in their own way is interesting. Unfortunately the series starts off well but goes off in a direction I wasn’t a fan of.

That’s it for this week! Keep an eye out next week, as you might miss an announcement about a book out for pre-order… See you next week!

After the End

Food Chain

Hi all!

Years ago I wrote a short story that I haven’t published called Food Chain. After writing a sequel I decided I wanted to continue writing in that universe. I thought I’d share the first part with you just in case I write more of it in the future!

Food Chain

A growl rumbles in Bagira's throat as she takes in the scent of her prey. It has recently passed through; the trail is still fresh. She breaks into a trot, her fluffy tail swishing from side to side. Her large paws are silent against the pavement.

A bird flying overhead barely makes her flinch as she continues in pursuit of her prey. She can hear the herd now, screeching to each other. Pressing her body low to the ground, she scoots into a patch of yellow grass, keeping her tail low and out of view.

The hooves of her prey clink on the concrete as they move from side to side, searching for anything edible. She pulls her lips back in a snarl as she eyes her target: an older camel with some sort of limp. Although it's large, she's confident she can take it down.

The brown animal huffs and bends its head, slowly moving away from the others. She licks her lips and wills her body to keep still as it inches further and further away from the herd.

Once it's far enough, she leaps.

She clashes with its tough hide, manoeuvring herself to climb onto its back. She digs her claws into its humps as she moves towards its head.

The creature shrieks and alerts the rest of the herd, which take off with a few panicked kicks. Dust is kicked into her eyes, but she manages to blink it out by the time her claws are hooked in its throat. It bleats and bucks its entire body, throwing her onto the concrete.

Momentarily winded, she watches her prey escape. Once she regains her composure she leaps onto the nearest wall and gives chase.

Thankfully due to its injury it's relatively slow, allowing her to catch up with ease. When she's side by side with it she launches herself at its throat. Teeth meets skin and makes a tearing sound upon contact. The taste of blood fills her mouth as the camel continues its vain attempt to escape. It manages to pull her in different directions, kicking up more dust and dirt and scouring the earth with its hooves. Once she can feel it weakening, she locks her arms around its face and takes another bite. This time it makes a horrified gurgling sound before slumping onto its knees. She licks her lips as it bleeds out in front of her.

Pleased with her kill, she goes to drag back to her lair when a loud bang makes her eardrums vibrate. She can only growl as a human male approaches, his death stick targeting her head. He points his stick at her and then towards the wall. Not wanting to give her prey up so easily, she stands her ground and roars at him. He gets too close for comfort, leaving her no choice but to smack the death stick out of his paws.

His grubby paws fly above his head as soon as she does so, and he starts backing off. The smell of sweat and urine emanates from his body, unlikely to be a tasty meal. With one last growl she returns to her camel, keeping her brown eyes locked on him.

Although his face is contorted in what she can only imagine is anger, he makes no other attempt to pursue her.

***

The camel is barely inside when her cubs burst out. Their grey spots are just starting to come through their snow-white fur, though their eyes are still a baby blue, yet to change to their permanent colour.

She cuffs her sons over their ears when they start playing with the prey's ears, whacking its limp skin. With a growl they sit up straight, watching her eat with curious eyes. They are not old enough to eat fresh kill yet, but she still prefers to stay close to them while eating herself. She had to go further this time, deeper into the abandoned buildings of the human city.

Her cubs play fight amongst the corpse of an old human transport, her mother had called them monsters. This one has been dead for years though, its pelt, once shiny and a vibrant colour, is now nothing more than a rusted brown and stone cold. She draws her tongue over her lips once she's done, dragging the rest of her kill into her lair. She had chosen old human territory to nest in. The humans didn't seem to want the large building anymore, even though there are remnants of their old rags inside.

She had taken to this place after the disaster. From her cage she had watched men flee as the sky burned orange and red with the fury of nature. The stars had been blocked out for days and she had been left to fend for herself. Sometimes she can still taste the ash, despite it clearing months ago. Once other animals started escaping into the human territory, she followed them, wanting a stable food source for her cubs.

Her eyelids start to droop, and she dreams of the days where she used to loll around in the sun, when two short booms catch her attention. Rushing back outside, her cubs are missing. She growls to call them to her, but they don't respond. Blood stains the floor where they had been playing and panic rises in her stomach.

She tastes the air once more, catching the scent of man. With a growl she bounds after the scent of her cubs, coming across a man wielding a death stick. In his arms are her cubs, hanging limply with blood dripping from their white fur.

They aren't supposed to hunt leopards.

With a roar, she launches at him. He doesn't have time to react when she knocks him over, crunching his collarbone with her teeth. Her cubs fly out of his arms and bounce off the pavement.

With a whine she noses one, but he is getting colder by the second. She roars at the sky, screaming her fury at nature for letting man take her cubs from her.

***

It's been days now, but Bagira isn't willing to let her cubs die in vain. Since she killed the man who had taken them from her, she had been stalking the human herd. They were moving North, using the camels she had previously hunted to pull their strange wooden contraptions. If they had noticed her, they hadn't bothered chasing her off, and they also didn't seem to care about the man she killed.

For days she had watched the human cubs play amongst the camels, but they weren't her target. Knowing that the men have moved ahead of their contraptions, she makes her move. The first camels spot her and start to bleat, but the men pay no attention.

It doesn't take much growling for them to start to run. The wooden contraptions are pulled behind them, crashing around on the concrete. The wooden wheels catch on the pavement and rip off, the contraptions dropping their cargo. Once a few camels start to flee, the whole herd follows. She creeps back into the grass with satisfaction as the camels rush through the human hunting grounds, trampling anyone who gets in their way. The men scream and either dive to safety or attempt to call the camels back. Without their precious camels they won't last long, especially if the contents of those contraptions are important.

Their screams are like music to her ears as she continues to follow the carnage. A lone man has been left behind by the others, his limbs crushed and sticking out at different angles. He feebly tries to pull himself after the others, his bones clicking with each movement. She places a paw on his back, relishing in the fear in his eyes as she delivers the killing bite.

No longer would she hunt wild camels.

Humans are her prey now.

That’s it for this week, maybe one day I’ll share more about Bagira and her story. Maybe I’ll post the short stories on my Patreon when I set it up! See you next week.

The First Elemental Dragons Bookmark

Hi all!

Last week I promised to show off a new piece of merchandise to you. If you haven't guessed from the title, it's a bookmark!

This one has been designed for Blood and Water, to match the colour scheme of the cover. The design was made by Blink Marketing and they also printed the bookmarks for me as well.

I've used one as a practice and I like the size and feel of the bookmark. I've added tassels as well because I like something extra that sticks out so you don't accidentally open the wrong page. The tassels come in a range of colours and I've added them to about half of the bookmarks so far. I think I will keep it this way so people have the option of a tassel if they want one.

I will be running a giveaway for these bookmarks, one on social media and one for my newsletter subscribers. If you want two chances of winning, you can sign up to my newsletter here: Newsletter

In the future I would like to have bookmarks made for each of my books. I thought about doing them in order but I will instead leave it to my mailing list subscribers to choose which one they want to see next. I'm going to get some colourful gel pens as well so I can sign them if that's what people want!

Eventually I would like to sell these, signed or unsigned, in a shop that I plan to open. They would be available on their own or hopefully in little packs that include a signed book. I'm still working out the logistics of this, so keep an eye out!

You can follow my Twitter, @jess_a_turnbull, so you can enter the giveaway. I'll be posting it later next week.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. See you next week.

PS: last chance to pick up the books in this bundle!

New Year, New Monsters 3: From the Darkness

Mute and Years Have Won Awards!

Hi all,

This week I’m writing about the 2023 Author Shout Reader Ready Awards. I entered both Years and Mute in around June last year and pushed it to the back of my mind until November. I received an email stating that both books had made through the first stage so I was pretty excited to see if they would place anywhere. Then I finally got the emails with the results…

Both of them won ‘Recommended Read’ awards!

I don’t enter my books in many awards as there are quite a few that are scams. They prey on writers who want to be an ‘award-winning’ author. A lot of these charge extortionate fees which then don’t end up going towards the prize pool. I always do my research before entering any awards. Usually Googling an award can show up with several results from other authors about their experiences. Another part that I came across that disappointed me is the amount of awards that won’t touch self-published books.

I entered Elemental Dragons #1: Blood and Water in the 2020 Reader Ready Awards so I knew that I could trust Author Shout. I just thought that I’d enter Mute and Years just to see how they would get on, I didn’t expect them to place in the second category!

I will be entering my books in more awards in the future but for now I’m going to take a break and focus on my writing. There are plenty of awards out there, after all! Maybe I’ll enter Celestial Plague #1: Nirvana in an award of some sort later in the year, when I have more books out in that series.

That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading. Next week I’m going to unveil a new piece of merchandise that I hope you will be excited to see! See you next week.

Heaven Chapter One Preview

Hi all!

The second book in the Celestial Plague series, Heaven, will be going up for pre-order next month! While you’re waiting for that, I thought I’d share the first chapter so you can get a sneak peak of what happens. Without further ado, chapter one is below:

Darkness swirls around Ashleigh as she opens her eyes. Her chest feels like someone is sitting on it, making it hard for her to breathe.

How did it come to this?

God was supposed to take everyone who hadn't sinned before releasing the rapture. Why had he left her behind?

A garbled voice muffles her eardrums. "Lee?"

It comes back to her at once; her father, the fire, her friends. She opens her eyes fully, trying to adjust to the darkness.

"Thank God you're awake." That was Raya.

"We were so worried about you," Shannon murmurs.

Her vision is still blurry and her entire body screams as she sits up. How could she forget about the sacrifice her father tried to make?

"I'm alive?" she asks, her voice gravelly.

"Well, you're not going to believe this," Raya mutters. "But a Sarj pulled you out."

For a moment, she's confused until she remembers the demons her father tried to control. One bite from one of those demons would mean that you turn into one. Shannon believes that it's the final stage of the SARJ virus, the virus which ignited the apocalypse. Bite four Unbitten and three Bitten to reach... something. Her mind is too fuzzy to remember the finer details.

"How are you feeling, Lee?" Shannon asks her softly.

"Everything hurts, and I don't like how dark it is. How long was I asleep?"

The fuzzy blobs of her friends appear to look at each other, but she can't be sure.

"Lee, it's the middle of the day. The sun is out," Raya explains.

"No... everything is so dark. You're both fuzzy."

"Looks like the smoke damaged her eyesight," A male voice grunts.

Ashleigh knows it’s Dan, the extra member of their group they picked up on the way to the town. As he had shown numerous times in the past, he only cared about the safety of Raya rather than the whole group.

"It’s probably temporary," Raya snaps at him. "She's been through a lot."

"So have you."

"Enough. I'm not telling you again."

Even without her sight, Ashleigh can sense the tension in the air. She doesn’t understand why Dan is still here. Raya has made it clear over and over that he wasn't welcome.

Why did he keep coming back?

"Where are we?" Ashleigh asks, feeling wooden floorboards on her fingertips.

"The church," Raya explains. "It was close and kept everyone away from the smoke."

"Where's Lord Warren?"

"He ran off," Shannon explains simply.

A part of her feels disappointed that her father would leave like that, but the other half isn't surprised. He was willing to sacrifice her to appease his followers, after all.

"What's the plan now?" Dan jumps in.

"We need to go back to town," Raya says. "You can do whatever, as long as it's away from us."

"Yeah, we need to find Jen," Shannon adds.

Jenna is Shannon's ex-girlfriend, who disappeared before they were captured by Warren. The only reason they were wandering around was that they were looking for her. Despite not liking her much, Ashleigh did hope that she was safe.

"But we're back where we started," Dan whines.

"You don't have to come with us. In fact, just don't," Raya snaps.

Dan obviously pretends he hasn't heard her. "Maybe we could take one of the trucks? That will cut the journey down."

"We're going to town, not another country," Raya replies wryly. "We don't need a car."

"You will if you want to get there quickly," he mumbles.

"Maybe we should use a car," Shannon says softly. "Weren't you learning how to drive?"

"I had two lessons," Raya explains with a sigh. "If I drive, we're all going to end up at the bottom of a ditch."

"I bet we won't!" Dan announces, scrambling to his feet. "I'll find one for us!"

Little stomps on the church floor let Ashleigh know he is leaving. She can hear the light scratching of Raya's nail against the floorboard, an almost silent way of letting everyone know she's frustrated.

"We could sneak out while he's not looking," Raya suggests.

"That would be mean, Rai," Ashleigh counters.

"And the way he's treated you and Shan isn't mean?"

"I'm sure he'll make up for his past behaviour."

"More like his current behaviour," Shannon mutters.

"Maybe he'll get better in time. We owe him a chance."

"We owe him nothing,” Raya growls back.

Ashleigh decides it’s better to be quiet. God would want them to give Dan a chance to atone for his mistakes, and she would give him one, even if no one else would.

"I found keys!" Dan runs back into the room, metal jingling in his hands. "We can go now!"

Raya sighs irritably. "If we die because I can't drive, it’s your fault."

***

Jenna loses count of the hours she spent in the closet. Although from the noises outside, it’s clear that the Unbitten have either been infected or escaped, she didn't want to chance it. There's been a lot of panicked voices on the other side and the thrum of feet on the carpet.

I think most of the carnage is over.

Her breath catches in her throat as she reaches the doorknob, only to hear footsteps on the other side. Several people pause outside the door, their shadows creeping up the walls.

"Found anyone else?" a male voice thrums.

"No, I think everyone still in the building is downstairs. B is calling a meeting."

"Why?"

"I dunno. I guess we've got some changes to make around here."

Jenna frowns at the news. She hoped that B had been killed, or at least infected when she set Erice, B's daughter, loose on the Unbitten faction. They had kicked her out, so she got her revenge. A Bot she used to distract guards had killed a few people as well, which was the icing on the cake.

"Come on. Let's go before we get reprimanded."

The footsteps echo as the people disappear down the hallway. Jenna sucks in a breath and opens the door a crack. Light spills into the closet as she peeks her head out. Bloody handprints litter the walls, and there are a few stains on the floors. Apart from that, nothing has changed.

Gingerly, Jenna steps out and silently shuts the door behind her. She can hear the murmurs of people downstairs and inwardly curses at the fact that it's her only exit. Creeping across the floor like a cat, she makes her way to the stairs, the voices getting louder and angrier.

She can only catch snippets of the shouting. "Bitten... Gone... Need to..." After everything that's happened, they’re probably trying to form a plan.

I bet now they really regret letting me go!

The first step creaks under her weight, making her pull her foot back. Luckily as she's a few floors up and drowned out by shouting, she isn't heard as she continues to descend the stairwell.

There's more blood on the stairs, dripping from the rails onto the carpets below. Jenna wonders why there’s so much blood, seeing as it only takes a single bite to pass the infection on.

Maybe some people got bitten more than once?

Once she gets on the second floor, she has to stifle a gasp at the sight before her. A Halo-O Bot is in pieces, smashed syringes surrounding its white body. It’s covered in claw marks and dents of all sorts. There's more blood pooled around the Bot, and Jenna realises it must have killed more people than she initially thought.

The Bots attack the infected and killed by injecting them with some sort of liquid. But if an Unbitten gets in the way, they won't hesitate to kill them too.

Still, an injection doesn't cause that much blood...

Cheer from below brings her back to the stairs, ignoring the broken body of the Bot. Slowly, she heads down the creaky steps, trying not to get too close.

"...we are one and the same now, we shouldn't fight them any longer!"

"We shall not fight against them anymore! We are Bitten now, and we will continue to survive."

Shit.

She hadn't even thought of the possibility of so many Bitten being left behind. The Bot was supposed to kill them all, not leave several to add more infection to the world.

"Once the injured have recovered, I will apologise for the initial attacks. We only did what we thought was necessary to protect ourselves. Do not feel ashamed."

Jenna's mind flicks back to the amount of blood everywhere. They had attacked each other after all.

Someone shouts a question, but she can't really hear over the multitude of cheers.

This was supposed to tear them apart, not bring them together!

"If we see Jenna or her group again, we will kill them. I had initially hoped she would be an asset due to her experience with fighting Bitten, but now I see that she is just a murderer."

Murderer? More like a protector of Unbitten!

How dare he compare her to some low-life killer? Would he rather that a whole group of Bitten were just wandering the streets? He shared her view that the Bitten should be wiped out!

But now he is one of them...

She feels bile rise in her throat. He wouldn't hesitate to infect her now. No matter what, she couldn't allow herself to get infected. Using all her courage, she peers through the stair rails at the people below. There are at least twenty of them, several of his group are now missing.

Or dead.

"None of this would have happened if you hadn't brought your daughter here!" someone jeers at B.

She can just about see B from this angle, surrounded by the mob of people in the hallway. "My daughter is dead now. Haven't I been punished enough?"

"No!" someone else cries. "My children are infected because of you!"

"Enough, they may be infected, but your daughter can now walk! She couldn't do that before the infection!"

"It healed us!" another person hollers. "We should be thankful that we got infected in the first place and not killed!"

Several people agree, cheering along with the people standing up for B. Jenna bites back a scream of disapproval. How could they be grateful for being infected? This has ruined their lives!

While they're all distracted with fighting amongst themselves, Jenna makes a run for the door, letting it slam behind her. She doesn't even bother to look back as the screaming dies down.

Cold air buffets her face as she hares down the streets, taking as many shortcuts as possible so they won't be able to follow. She wasn't going to let them infect her now. Eventually, her legs scream out for her to stop, and she presses herself against a shop window, her chest and gills heaving with each breath. She recognises the orange pavement of Mood Street, feeling relieved that she's managed to get far away from the new Bitten group.

Her plan hadn't worked out as well as she'd hoped. The virus was supposed to drive them apart, not closer together. Had it all been for nothing?

No. The look on B's face was worth it.

Still, she was upset that she had managed to create more Bitten. She wanted to wipe the virus out, not let it grow. With one last look over her shoulder, she heads towards the path that would get her out of the city.

My 2023 Writing Goals

Hi all!

Seeing as I posted my year in review last week, I’m now going to post my writing goals for 2023! There are a lot of big ones this year and I’d like to push myself to get them done.

Write five books.

Of course my first goal is how many books I want to write. This year I’m planning on hitting five. One of those will be Street Rats, which I want to finish by the end of the year. The others will be:

Original Elementals #6: Sunrise

Missing Constellations

Original Elementals #7: Stormburst

Original Elementals #8: Turf

Publish two books.

Celestial Plague #2: Heaven and Celestial Plague #3: Purgatory will both be published this year! Heaven in April and Purgatory in October. I would love to publish more often once my books start earning more profit.

This book will be published in April this year!

Edit three books.

Like last year, I’m going to stick with three books to edit. One will be Celestial Plague #4: Hell while the others will be in the Curse of Anubis series.

Get covers designed for the final books in Celestial Plague.

The cover designs have been booked for both Purgatory and Hell, which will both have covers by the end of the year! I’ll also be booking in covers for the first two books in the Curse of Anubis series. As always, I’ll be going to Deranged Doctor Design to have these covers made.

Write the Curse of Anubis Short Story Collection.

I’ve decided that I want this reader magnet to be like the Elemental Dragons Short Story Collection, a bunch of short stories written from that universe. So far I have stories planned for: the fight between Bastet and Sekhmet, how Sekhmet got her mane, why Mafdet ran away, how Set created the sha and Ra fleeing before the events of Curse of Anubis. I want to get all the stories done by the end of the year, even though Curse of Anubis won’t be published until late 2024.

Write more short stories.

I had so much fun with this last year and I love expanding my publishing portfolio. I want to add more anthologies to my publishing shelf so I will be writing more short stories to submit next year. Now that I have an easy way of finding ones to submit to, it shouldn’t take too long for me to submit them.

Design more merchandise.

So far I have had a lot of stickers designed for Elemental Dragons and also a bookmark (to be shown at a later date!). I want to get merch designed for my other books as well as finding a way to get it out there for you. I’m looking into setting up an online shop so you all can order what you like from me. I would love to add signed books into the mix as well, as I think that’s what you would be interested in as well. So for this year, I’ll focus on getting more merch designed with the possibility of a shop popping up as well.

I’d love to get stickers designed for Mute and Years - they will probably be cats!

Set up a Patreon.

I have been wanting to do this for ages. I’ve asked my newsletter subscribers what they would like to see most from me and also what rewards they would be interested in. I have a simple plan for content at the moment, which would be:

Mishie Mondays - weekly updates written in Mishka’s perspective, complete with pictures.

100 Word Drabbles - once a week publication of a 100 word story from one of my books. Although my main focus is to start with will be Elemental Dragons, I want to write drabbles from my other books as well.

Chapter of Missing Constellations - once a week I will post a chapter from the Patreon exclusive, Missing Constellations. It will be a YA Fantasy book focusing on Laelaps and the Teumessian Fox. Every few hundreds years they are allowed to return to Earth for a day in their human forms, but are then sent back to the sky. However, one day they aren’t sent back, and are instead turned back into their canine forms when night falls. They need to find out what’s stopping the gods from sending them back to their constellation, and why other creatures like them are also suffering the same fate.

Weekly polls - once a week a poll will be posted so my supporters can vote on what I write next, character design, 100 word drabbles and even what merch they want designed next.

Build up my mailing list.

My aim is to do more newsletter swaps and participate in more book bundles in 2023. I would love to spread the word of my books and my newsletter seems like the best way to do that!

Continue learning Spanish.

This is a more personal goal than a writing one, though I suppose it will help me if I decide to add a different language to my books. I want to continue learning the language anyway, even if it’s just five minutes a day!

Read 50 books.

I’m cutting my goal in half this year so I can focus on all of my goals above. The first book that I read will of course be a Warriors one! I have many books on my to be read pile that I need to get through so I can make room for more.

Participate in both Camp NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriMo.

As with past years, I will be participating in all the events. I love filling up the word counter on their website and I’ve found that I work so much better with a deadline. Plus, I made a lot more buddies this year and it’s so fun to see everyone’s progress!

That’s it for this week! If you have any goals for 2023, I wish you the best of luck! Next week I will be posting an excerpt of the first chapter of Celestial Plague #2: Heaven, so make sure you keep an eye out for it, see you next week.

PS; don’t forget to check out these book bundles!
